FACTS AND FIGURES

The Museum der Kulturen operates an ethnological museum in 11 buildings, managed in accordance with the principles of the International Council of Museums, based on the model principles for the Basel Museums and the Museums Act.

Activities in 2010 were concentrated on the building project and the opening of the main building in 2011.

Although the building activities severely restricted the staging of exhibitions, the annex was used to stage two temporary exhibitions (‘Woven Beauty – The Art of West African Textiles’ and ‘Interspaces - selected objects from the collections set against photographs of the building under reconstruction’, which attracted more than 21,000 visitors. Despite the limited space, 104 guided tours and events took place and 74 school groups visited.

2010 was the successful completion of moving the collections from the museum quarter to the new storage facilities. Over a period of seven years, more than 300'000 objects were moved from numerous locations to two central depots.
